While traversing his regular route to work on a tree-lined road near Dickson, Tennessee, James Allen suddenly slammed on the brakes. There, by the roadside, stood a slender, tan-colored dog, appearing to protectively watch over a cardboard box.
““I travel that road almost every day and [the] box was not there yesterday,” Allen recounted to Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue in a Facebook post detailing the incident.
Upon closer inspection, Allen discovered the box housing five puppies, with an older dog nearby assumed to be their mother. It appeared that someone callously abandoned them, leaving them vulnerable and alone.
“Mom was looking up the road, as if to see whether her people were returning,” a spokesperson from Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue shared with The Dodo.
Worried about the pups’ well-being, Allen shared their photos on Facebook, hoping for assistance. Before long, he linked up with Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue, whose volunteers were enthusiastic about bringing the dogs to safety.
Later that evening, the rescue organization updated their Facebook page with the reassuring message: “These babies and mom are now safe with us.”
Before long, the mother dog and her puppies adapted to their new life at the rescue center, relishing the comfort of a cozy bed and abundant meals.
Staff members at Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue were disheartened, though not entirely caught off guard, by the plight of this small family struggling to survive on their own.
“Sadly, things like this occur far too frequently in this area,” lamented a representative from Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue. “Regardless of the redundancy of these situations, it infuriates me and breaks my heart.”
At last, secure in their resilience, this family can rest assured they’ll never again fret about navigating life independently.
